For a lot of people, the answer to this question may seem obvious, but while being in business I have come to discover that many people are completely unaware of why natural is better. Over the last few decades, we have been so over-exposed to toxic chemicals it has become all, a lot of people know and many haven’t even considered natural alternatives. I will start with the obvious reason to go natural, which is we are natural beings. Our bodies are natural, made up of much of the same elements naturally found in nature like carbon for example. If you know about the law of oneness, then you know some way or another we are all interconnected. Natural ingredients agree better with us as natural beings whereas man-made chemicals are foreign to our bodies.
When we started introducing too many chemicals and fake things into our lives we introduced a slew of problems. It’s like a coffee machine meant to grind coffee beans now being overloaded with wood chips everyday. It may work for a time but after a while it will take a toll on the coffee machine and can lead to early breakdown since it was designed to grind coffee beans and not wood chips. Well, it’s the same thing we see today. Many of us suffer from toxic overload. From the artificial food we eat, to the music we listen to, or the company we keep. The same is true with our skincare, all the chemical laden products we use everyday builds up and can cause some serious harm. It takes less then a minute for the things we put on our skin to enter our bloodstream and many of the ingredients used in conventional skin care today are known carcinogens and contain neuro toxins and endocrine disruptors. There are literally hundreds of dangerous chemicals that have been allowed on the market, but I will highlight just a few.
Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) / Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES)
This is one of the more popular ones to be avoided as it is found in over 85% of skin care products (think foaming products like shampoo) but should really be avoided at all cost. It is a known skin and lung irritant and when mixed with other chemicals can be carcinogenic.
Parabens
Parabens are very popular in skin care products as it is used as a preservative to prevent mould and yeast from growing. A lot of products are water-based so need a preservative, however with natural skin care mine at least there is no water there fore no need to worry about mould and other yucky things growing. Natural ingredients also have a more stable shelf life. Parabens are known to mimic estrogen in the body and have been found in breast cancer tumours. Yes, this ingredient is known to cause cancer. It’s best to avoid any products that mimic estrogen in the body whether food or cosmetic.
Fragrances
This one is tricky because companies can put a bunch of chemicals together without listing them in the ingredients to protect their secret scents and simply list it as fragrance or perfumes, so with this one we really don’t even know what we are using on our bodies. Fragrances can be linked to allergies, dermatitis, respiratory distress and have potential negative effects on the reproductive system. At psalms Natural we only use high quality essential oils for scents and I am not afraid to list each one in the ingredients!
Synthetic Colours
Synthetic colors are banned in the EU but allowed in most of our skin care and FOOD. They are often listed as F for food or D&C for drug and cosmetic followed by a color and number like FD&C blue 3. They have been linked to ADD and ADHD in children and are suspected carcinogenic in us natural beings. I have found that a lot of companies even those that claim to be natural use synthetic colors in some of their products like soap for example. At psalms natural I only use natural colorants in my soap like healing clays that not only make the soaps more visually appealing but also have added skin benefits.
These are simply just a few. There are literally thousands of chemicals we are exposed to everyday possibly putting our health at risk. Some other popular ones to avoid include petrolatum, phthalate, BHA and BHT, formaldehyde, triclosan and siloxanes. When we as consumers continue to buy these products, we are letting the companies know that we just don’t care and its okay to poison us if we can smell good for a brief time. We have the power to use our dollars to demand change. I can see a shift is beginning to take place not just with cosmetics but also our food, but we still have a long way to go. Now I know we cannot possibly avoid all chemicals but the least amount of chemical exposure the better for not just us but also the environment. Be conscious, be aware, read every label and please try to choose more natural skin care for yourself and family like psalms natural skin care.
